Synopsis

Monty Python’s Spamalot recounts the iconic story of King Arthur’s journey to find the Holy Grail. Taking inspiration from the cult classic movie (Monty Python and the Holy Grail), this show also has a fresh perspective on the traditional legend. Instead, the musical includes shenanigans like a line of beautiful dancing girls, flying cows, farting Frenchmen, and killer rabbits. Outside, there’s plague with a 50% chance of widespread disease and famine. During the show, Arthur travels with his servant Patsy, also recruiting multiple knights to join the mission. These knights include the eccentric Sir Bedevere, Sir Robin, Sir Lancelot, and Sir Galahad. They don’t only meet killer rabbits and flatulent Frenchman, but also several quirky characters such as Lady of the Lake, Prince Herbert, Tim the Enchanter, Not Dead Fred, the Black Knight, as well as the Knights who say Ni.

History and Awards

Monty Python’s Spamalot takes inspiration from Monty Python’s 1975 cult classic movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Many of the gags, characters, and scenes are lifted directly from the hit movie. The musical also draws from Monty Python’s sketch comedy, Arthurian myth, as well as Broadway musical parodies. If you were already aware, Monty Python is an iconic British comedy troupe. Created in the sixties, the group was made up of Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin.

Monty Python’s Spamalot opened its doors in Chicago in the winter of 2004. The musical officially opened on Broadway a year later in March. Unsurprisingly, the show was met with great acclaim, earning 14 Tony Award nominations and winning as many as three categories, including Best Musical, Best Featured Actress (Sara Ramirez), as well as Best Direction (Mike Nichols). In 2006, the original cast album also took home a well-deserved Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, all the while the touring production snagged a Boston Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Visiting Production. And that’s not all… the 2023 Kennedy Center revival got several 2024 Helen Hayes Award nominations, such as Outstanding Production – Musical, Outstanding Director (Josh Rhodes), Choreography, Musical Direction (John Bell), Ensemble, and Supporting Performers (Michael Urie, Rob McClure, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer). What’s more, the 2023 Broadway revival earned even more nominations in 2024, including a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Drama Desk Award, Drama League Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award.

“A solid staging with plenty of tap-dancing, comic mugging, and general Broadway glitz” – Theater Mania
