The essence of “Swan Lake” is deeply rooted in an emotional narrative, a tale of undying love, heartbreaking betrayal, and the struggle between good and evil.
Scheduled for spring 2026, this nationwide tour will be running from February 5 in Arroyo Grande, CA, with a special Valentine's Day stop in San Francisco at the Golden Gate Theatre on February 14, 2026, and the tour will continue on until May 18th.
Featuring a full, live orchestra playing Tchaikovsky's score, 50 classically trained dancers from around the world, and over 150 radiant, hand-sewn costumes set against a lavish and hand-crafted set. It's a night of magic, mystery, and breathtaking beauty.
Swan Lake was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as his first ballet between 1875 and 1876 and premiered on March 4, 1877, at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where it was a complete and utter failure, with critics calling the music too noisy.
The story is based on Russian and German folk tales, like "The Stolen Veil" or "The White Duck." Princess Odette is cursed by sorcerer Von Rothbart to be a swan by day, and in the ballet she will dance both the parts of Odette, the White Swan, and Odile, the Black Swan. During act 3, Odile will perform 32 fouettés en tournant, which has come to be recognized as an exceptional athletic feat.
The World Ballet Company is based in Los Angeles, California, and is led by co-founders Sasha Gorskaya and Gulya Hartwick. The company is primarily focused on preserving and celebrating classical ballet heritage and places high regard on classics like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker but also produces original works like The Great Gatsby Ballet. The company is equally committed to authenticity, as many of their performances include live orchestra accompaniment, their costumes are hand-sewn, needing over 150 for a production like Swan Lake, and their sets are all hand-crafted.
Opening on March 26, 1922, as a vaudeville house before transitioning to a major film theater in the mid-20th century and finally closing in the 70s. It was restored in 1979 and opened as a performing arts venue by BroadwaySF. Over the years it has seen many major productions like Fiddler on the Roof, Sweeney Todd, Hairspray, and Mamma Mia!.
