The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus is the first openly gay chorus in the world, boasting over 300 singers. They have been breaking down barriers that keep people apart since the evening of Harvey Milk’s assassination in 1978, when their initial 115 members took to the steps of the San Francisco City Hall and shook the world to silence with Mendelssohn’s Thou, Lord Our Refuge. Since then, and in spite of facing persecution and intolerance, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus has gone from strength to strength, shining the light of love, tolerance, acceptance, and hope on the world. They are an inspiration to LGBTQIA+ communities everywhere, and have the power to set changes of heart in motion in those who discriminate against them.
