Whenever you think of a bold, resilient female character in a Broadway show, Patti LuPone comes to mind. She dazzled her audience with her 1973 Broadway debut in Three Sisters, and since has just been growing bolder, better, and more spectacular: Eva Perón from Evita, Rose in Gypsy, Joanne in Company, Fantine in Les Misérables, Moll in The Cradle Will Rock, Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard - the diva extraordinaire has done them all, and to much critical acclaim. To date, Patti LuPone has received no less than two Grammy Awards, three Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, and two Olivier Awards among others, totalling to 17 wins out of 32 award nominations.
Apart from her endeavours on Broadway and the West End, Patti LuPone is also much-adored for her solo shows. Conceived and directed by Scott Whitman, written by John Weidman, and with musical direction by Joseph Thalken and additional material by Jeffrey Richman, Matters Of The Heart delves deep into everything love - young love, painful love, consuming love, unhealthy love, lusty love - delivered in superb, powerhouse vocals, making audiences fall in… well… love. Patti LuPone is never scared to keep it real, to get right to the point. Her superb stagecraft, professionalism, and prowess, underlined by her signature belting, command of ballads, and unabashed comedy, make for some goosebump-inducing stuff - gritty, delightful, breathtaking, sublime.
