Fiddler on the Roof is a production with music by Jerry Bock, book by Joseph Stein, and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, set in the Pale of Settlement in Imperial Russia in or around the year 1905. This masterpiece was inspired by Sholem Aleichem's short story "Tevye and His Daughters," also known as "Tevye the Dairyman." At the beginning of the tale, Tevye, a milkman in the tiny village of Anatevka, is battling to safeguard the Jewish customs of his family from external influences. Tevye must learn to accept his three daughters' independence and their desire to marry for love, despite his growing disdain for the men they have chosen to marry. The Jews of the area are eventually compelled to flee by a Tsar decree.
Including, Best Musical, Score, Book, Direction, and Choreography, this musical was awarded nine Tony Awards. There have been five successful renditions on Broadway, and it was adapted into a popular film in 1971. Community and educational theater productions have also made frequent use of it. With songs like "Tradition," "Sunrise," "If I Were a Rich Man," "Matchmaker," and "To Life (L'Chaim! )," as well as an absolutely brilliant ensemble, the story will come to life. You really can't afford to miss this one.
